Ngorongoro crater

Was established in 1959, from Arusha municipality is 180 km,from Serengeti national park is 145 km ,from Lake Manyara national park is 60 km

it covers an area of 8300 km squire Altitude ranges from 1020 m-3587m (1500m-3700m) above the sea level

The Ngorongoro Crater/ Caldera takes up 304 km squire

It is 610m deep

Around 25,000 animals live in the crater throughout the year.

What is the name Ngorongoro?

Some say the word is taken from an especially variant group of Datoga warriors who defeated maasai in pitches battle on the floor of the Ngorongoro crater 200 years ago.Even now the Maasai show a certain respect for the Datoga calling them Mangati which means respected enemy.

But the word Ngorongoro is typically dirivded from Maasai word with different meaning

Geology and pre-history

Nine volcanoes in the Ngororngoro highlands were formed during the past four millions years , one of these,oldonyo lengai(mountain of god)is still active

Over millennia the ash and dust from each eruption has been carried by the winds to from the fertile soils of the sereneti plains

The earliest sign of mankind in the NCAA is the Laetoli where hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years old .Further north , oldupai gorge has yielded a wealth of hominid and animal remains .
