The Great rift valley

The Great rift valley Eastern branch

The great rift valley which turns and bisects Tanzania central plateau is part of the east African rift valley system ,Africa’s most destructive relief features. This system stretches almost 6500 in from red sea to the north of Beira

It was formed more than 30 million years ago ,when the two tectonic plates the African plate and the Eurasian plate collided and then diverged again.

The Rift Valley total length is 7200 km long with 6500 km in africa and the remaining 700km in Asia ( from lebanon to red sea)

Africa Great Rift Valley has divided in to two branches ,The eastern branch and Western branch which splited from north of lake Turkna in Kenya and joined at lake Nyasa in Malawi

The Eastern branch passes through lake Manyara-Amboseli-Ambussel-ake Eysasi-Lake Natron and ended at lake Nyasa

The western branch passes through Uganda – Rwanda-Burudi-congo(drc)-Zambia and Malawi to which it joins at lake Nyasa then proceeding to Beira Mozambique
