RONGAI route is one of the best trails with less steep going up and descend through the MARANGU route  where exit Marangu gate the headquarters of mount Kilimanjaro here you will get spectacular scenery from this dry side of the mountain with the dry forest at starting point and montane/wet forest at the last of trek same time will offer different wildlife of mountain species and vegetation change from one zone to another zone.

Day 1; Rongai gate to Simba camp

The trail is not very steeper on this hike and also is shorter as a leeward side so the rainforest here looks more dryer as less rainfall received and mountain heather begins sooner after the camp.

  • Distance: 5.8 to 2nd cave plus 3.3km to 3rd cave camp in total 9.1km; altitude gained 852m to 2nd cave; 2ndcave to 3rd cave 449m; 1301 in total
  • Duration; 6-7hours ascent to 3rd caves campsite
  • Duration; 7-8 hours to Kikelelwa camp
  • Simba campsite: 2635m/8645ft
  • Second cave camp (hot lunch stop); 3487m/11,440ft
  • Third caves campsite; 3936m/12,913ft overnight stay

Day 3; Kikelelwa camp to Mawenzi tarn hut camp

Duration; 3.5-4 hour’s ascent Distance: 3.75km; altitude gained; 627m Mawenzi tarn hut camp; 4,302m/14114ft overnight stay and acclimatization excursions will proc afternoon

Day 4;Mawenzi tarn hut camp to school hut base camp

This day hike will start like come back to where you came from over little Mawenzi ridge then follow your front steep along the saddle area might KIBO PEAK shine ahead of you, very close to Kibo huts then divert to way following your right-hand side where School hut campsite is behind of some cliffs to go over.

Day 5; School hut camp to Uhuru peak summit and then descent to Horombo hut base camp

  • Duration; 7-8hours ascent to Uhuru peak
  • Distance: 1.9km to Kibo huts route plus 4km to Uhuru peak 5.9km in total; altitude gained; 457m to Kibo huts route, plus 721m to Uhuru peak 1178m in total
  • School hut base camp: 4717m/15,476ft
  • Kibo huts junction; 5174m/16,975ft
  • Hans Meyer cave; 5,259m/17,254ft
  • Gillman’s point; 5685m/18,562ft
  • Stella point: 5745m/18848ft
  • Uhuru peak: 5895m/19,341ft

From Uhuru peak descend down to Horombo camp

  • Distance: 15.75km: altitude Lost; 2174m
  • Kibo huts: 4,714m/15,466ft
  • Horombo huts camp: 3,721m/12,208ft overnight stay

Day 6; Horombo huts campsite to Marangu gate

  • Duration; 5-6 hours descend
  • Distance: 20km [20.75km on the nature trail: altitude lost; 1816m]
  • Mandara hut: 2723m/8934ft
  • Marangu gate; 1905m/6250ft

Forest so thick and vast on Kilimanjaro especially this windward side which tends to be much rainfall, Marangu montane/rainforest. The descent begins Horombo camp after morning breakfast and word of thanks hit on the trail down which mostly gentle steep down on this lower moorland greenish heading to cloud forest start at Mandara huts after covered 11 km then 8.4km would be followed from here to Marangu gate along the thick montane forest with the habitat of monkeys are common and other wildlife.

This trail used in both ways up and down might be meeting with other groups take the Marangu route on they are ascending days.

Finally, the drive to Moshi town would take about an hour after signing out Marangu gate to this town then have almost an hour for lunch break probably to lost more altitude before drive an hour and a half again to Arusha and trek completed.
